Leadership Training Courses for Boys

Leadership Training Courses (LTC) being run for Boys are Red, Blue and Green Braid Courses and the week long course (Leadership Development Course - LDC) run during the July school holidays. Satisfactory completion of the Braid courses and/or the week long course is a requirement for the Queen's Badge.

The Introductory Leadership Training Course

(Red Braid)

Location: Brigade House
Note: Boys should come prepared to stay over night Completion of the course meets the requirements for the Red Braid.
During the course, participants will examine the qualities of effective leaders, study the method and approaches used in The Boys' Brigade, participate in group leadership tasks and better equip themselves for the Drill and BB Knowledge components of The Boys' Brigade Knowledge Awards.
Who Can Attend?
The course is designed for Boys of at least 14 BB age who are recommended by their Captain as suitable candidates.
How are Participants assessed?
Although there is no formal assessment of participants at the end of the course, all participants are required to attend all sessions and show a satisfactory degree of effort and co-operation. Instructors will be able to subjectively gauge the increased knowledge and skill of the participants as they take part in the various lectures, discussions, workshops and practical activities.
When is the Award presented?
An Introductory Leadership Training Course Certificate and Red Braid will be presented at the conclusion of the course. Company Captains should organise to re-present the certificate and braid locally to recognise the Boys achievement. This course fulfils the Leadership requirements for Private First Class.

The Group Leadership Training Course

(Blue Braid)

Location: Brigade House
Note: Boys should come prepared to stay over night Satisfactory completion of the course meets the requirements for the Blue Braid.
During the course, participants will be challenged on their own leadership potential. There will be opportunity to lead a group through an activity to achieve an objective and to participate in a group as part of the group to achieve an objective. The course also aims to focus the participants on their role in a Company as a Squad Leader and NCO. There is a session on caring for Boys in a Squad and how to assist Boys function as a Squad. During the course Boys will operate in Squads in practical and discussion activities.
Who Can Attend?
This course is designed for Boys 15. BB age and up who hold the Red Braid, especially for those who show leadership potential.
How are Participants assessed?
Although there is no formal assessment of participants at the end of the course, all participants are required to attend all sessions and show a satisfactory degree of effort and co-operation. An Officer will be attached to each Squad as a facilitator steering the Squad towards the desired outcome and observing how the Squad members work within the Squad.
When is the Award presented?
The Group Leadership Certificate and Blue Braid will be presented at the conclusion of the course. Company Captains should organise to re-present the certificate and braid locally to recognise the Boys achievement.

The Company Leadership Training Course

(Green Braid)

Location: Brigade House
Note: Boys should come prepared to stay over night.
This course is for Boys who demonstrate a mature level of co-operation and participation. In conjunction with the previous qualifications gained in The Introductory Leadership Training Course (Red Braid) and The Group Leadership Training Course (Blue Braid)
Who Can Attend?
This course is designed for No. 2 Section Boys aged 16 and up who hold the Blue Braid and especially show an advanced leadership potential.
What will I learn?
For the Green Braid you will receive Training in: Teamwork, Interpersonal Relationships, Problem Solving, Decision Making, Discuss Ideas Relating to their own Company, Gain Greater Understanding of Leadership at a Company Level. To qualify for the Green Braid participants must attend all sessions during the weekend and demonstrate a mature level of co-operation and participation.
How are Participants assessed?
An Officer from your Company must attend the entire weekend with you. You will also be required to attend the entire weekend to qualify. An Officer will be attached to each Squad and whilst not leading the group to the desired outcome, will steer the Squad towards the desired outcome and observe how the Squad members work within the Squad.
When is the Award presented?
The Leadership Certificate and Green Braid will be presented at the conclusion of the course. Company Captains should organise to re-present the certificate and braid locally to recognise the Boys achievement. On the Saturday evening there may be an activity / outing involving a small cost. Details available closer to the event.

Leadership Development Courses


Leadership Development Course Stage 1

(White Braid)

Location: Challenge Ranch, 160 Henson's Road, Somersby (Via. Gosford)

This Leadership Development Course, conducted by The Boys' Brigade Australia in New South Wales, is highly regarded by participants, their Companies and in the wider community including Churches, Church leaders and employers. LDC will be a new experience of fun, friendship and challenge. You will go home with new skills. It may even change your life!! Young men aged 15 or more To be able to participate fully, you will need to have reached in your own development a level of personal maturity and behaviour stability that enables you to operate in a Group, working together. If you are a bit shy or under confident, that's OK, the Course will assist you develop skills and confidence. If you still need supervision, wait until next year's Course.

Date: Usually July School Holidays  LDC Stage 1 concludes with a graduation service at 7:30pm. Officers and parents are invited to attend the graduation. The Course offers personal challenge (eg rock climbing, personal development), a look at leadership and leadership styles, development of leadership skills (including communication, problem solving and decision making), teaching skills public speaking, and overall, concentrates on working together in a Group and developing some understanding of Group dynamics.

(Gold Braid)

The Stage 2 course builds on the Stage 1 experience and concentrates on personal decision making, future planning and commitment. The major activity is a three-day/night solo. The course also encourages looking outwards beyond yourself to see you place and your ministry in the community. LDC will be a new experience of fun, friendship and challenge. You will go home with new skills. It may even change your life!! Young men aged 16 or more, and who have completed LDC Stage 1, this Course is for you. This includes young men who are already Junior Officers. To be able to participate fully, you will need to have reached in your own development a level of personal maturity and behaviour stability. This course will specifically enable you to develop further in your Christian maturity and walk. If you are a bit shy or under confident, that's OK, the Course will assist you develop in confidence.
